2023 International Conference on Climate and Energy Finance

With the global challenges of climate change, President Jinping Xi again emphasized that we should insist on building before breaking, carry out the carbon peaking action step by step in a planned way, and gradually shift to a system of ‘dual control’ of total carbon emissions and intensity at the 20th Communist Party of China National Congress.

Against this backdrop, Business school, Hunan University hosted the 2023 International Conference on Climate and Energy Finance (ICEF) in Changsha, China, on 2-4 June, 2023. This conference focuses on “New Trends in Climate Finance under the Carbon Neutrality Target”. This year, more than 500 scholars from over 120 Universities in China, Singapore, Japan and the U.S. participated in the conference, and 59 offline sessions were successfully organized to explore new ideas and cutting-edge researches.

Professor Chi Xie, Executive Vice President of Hunan University, Professor Zhi Yang, Dean of Business School, Hunan University, and Professor Dayong Zhang from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, the President of Society for the Studies of Climate Finance, Chinese Society of Optimization, Overall Planning and Economic Mathematics, delivered speeches. Professor Yue-Jun Zhang, Vice Dean of Business School, Hunan University, and Professor Qiang Ji from the Institutes of Science and Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences also attended the opening ceremony.

Four experts, including Professor Christiane Baumeistere from the University of Notre Dame, Professor Tieju Ma from East China University of Science and Technology, Professor Shunsuke Managi from Kyushu University, and Professor Bin Su, from the Energy Research Institute, National University of Singapore, were invited to deliver keynote presentations. They provided interdisciplinary dialogues and academic exchanges contributing to facilitating critical insights into climate finance and energy transition.

Since 2018, the International Conference on Climate and Energy Finance has been successfully held for six times, with participants coming from more than 150 universities in 21 countries and regions. ICEF conferences have been included in the Guide to Major Academic Conferences of the China Association for Science and Technology for four consecutive years, playing an important role in promoting the development of climate and energy finance disciplines and talent training in China. 

This conference was co-organized by the Institutes of Science and Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences, TIERS from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, the Society of Systems Engineering and Management in Hunan, Energy Soft Science Center of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and the Team of Energy, Environment and Finance Innovation of Nanjing University of Science and Technology. The next ICEF in year 2024 will be convened in Weihai, China.
