The opening meeting of the National Social Science major project was successfully held

On June 14, the opening and evaluation meeting for the major national social science fund project titled “Research on China’s Energy Security Issues from the Perspective of Multiple Risk Factors” was successfully held at the Institutes of Science and Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Qiang Ji, Researcher and Chief Expert of the project, led the meeting, which invited several esteemed scholars, including Professor Ying Fan, Dean of the School of Economics and Management at Beihang University; Researcher Hu Gao from the Energy Research Institute of the National Academy of Macroeconomic Research; Professor Gang Liu from the School of Urban and Environmental Sciences at Peking University; Professor Qunwei Wang, Dean of the School of Economics and Management at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics; Professor Yudong Wang, Dean of the School of Economics and Management at Nanjing University of Science and Technology; Professor Dayong Zhang from the Institute of Economics and Management at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics; and Associate Professor Junming Zhu, Deputy Dean of the School of Public Management at Tsinghua University. Wenkai Chen, Party Secretary and Vice President of the Institutes of Science and Development, also attended the meeting.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Researcher Xiaolei Sun from the Institutes of Science and Development, with a speech given by Secretary Wenkai Chen. She warmly welcomed and expressed heartfelt gratitude to the experts and scholars who traveled from afar. Chen congratulated Chief Expert Qiang Ji and all members of the project team, providing a brief overview of the recent developments and achievements of the Institutes, particularly in the area of energy security. She emphasized that the major social science project led by Qiang Ji holds significant theoretical value for advancing China’s energy security governance system and supporting the country’s energy security strategy. Chen also stated that the Institutes would provide necessary services, support, and management to ensure the smooth implementation of the project.

Chief Expert Qiang Ji provided a detailed report on the project, covering several aspects including the background and scientific questions of the topic, the research content and approach, the research team and its foundational work, as well as the expected outcomes and timeline.

Subproject leaders, including Associate Researcher Kun Guo from the School of Economics and Management at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Associate Researcher Fei Wu from the Institute of Economics and Management at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, Researcher Yu Yang from the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Researcher Yan Xia from the Institutes of Science and Development, and Professor Xunpeng Shi from the University of Technology Sydney, supplemented the discussion by elaborating on their respective subproject topics and research plans. They expressed their commitment to actively collaborate with the main project and other subprojects, ensuring the successful completion of the major research tasks to meet the significant development needs of the country.

The attending experts engaged in extensive discussions and exchanges regarding the project implementation plan. The expert panel fully acknowledged the project’s innovation, feasibility, and academic value, emphasizing that the research is of significant importance for ensuring China’s energy security.

The experts expressed their recognition of the project’s preparation status and team structure, and they held high expectations for the anticipated outcomes. They also provided numerous constructive and guiding suggestions for the project’s further development.

Professor Ying Fan delivered a concluding speech, stating that the project focuses on significant national strategic needs, with clearly defined objectives and well-articulated scientific questions. She encouraged the project team to leverage their interdisciplinary strengths and contribute valuable insights toward building a new era energy security governance system for China.
